When you think of railroads, I’ll bet office chairs don’t come to mind. You may not think that railroads and office chairs have anything in common, but historically, the creation of the office chair links back to the arrival of the railway in the mid-1800s. Of course the focus on the ergonomics of office chairs in those days were minimal, but the idea that the office chair would increase productivity and accessibility spans over the centuries. Most work pre-railway was manual labor and farming – almost 90% of the civilian work force were farmers – but with the railway came a change in labor.

The railway created an expansion of family businesses into larger, more corporate services. With the boom in the business realm, administrative work became essential, introducing jobs like accounting, bookkeeping, and correspondence. Designed to increase productivity of clerical employees in the 1800s, the purpose of the office chair hasn’t changed much since. Also, because technology was also booming, office equipment became important for the first time. Employees were expected to sit and work long hours – much like we are expected to do now. Comfort became a key factor, and office chairs began to develop as professions did in the 19th century. Chairs began to be made with wood saddle swivel seats, slatted backs, and armrests.

In the 1970s, an important factor was added to the design of the office chair, with emphasis on ergonomics. Today, we realize more and more how important comfort and support is in an office chair, especially with how much time we spend sitting at work. Most office chairs also have wheels, making moving around easier and faster. Office chairs are now constructed so that an individual can adjust the seat height and tilt, armrests, and chair back. All office chairs should provide proper lumbar support. Back, neck, and shoulder pain are serious issues in the workplace, making it vital that employees are smart about choosing an office chair that fully supports them, and that their office chair is individualized to meet their body’s needs. Your individual weight, height and dimensions are important when investing in an office chair.

Each body is unique and today’s office chair construction takes that into consideration. Leather office chairs are comfortable, durable, and easy to clean. Others might prefer office chairs with different fabrics, which are sometimes easier on the wallet, but still give great support. Drafting chairs are also a wonderful choice for architects and artists and other people who have professions that involve higher desks than the normal ones you would find in an office. Drafting chairs most often have a footrest. Executive chairs most often have more seat padding than task chairs and give ample comfort and a reclining option that most office chairs don’t have. Whichever office chair you end up choosing, you can count on two things: it will be more comfortable than the chairs of the 1800s, and it will be one of the most important purchases you make.

You’re a hard worker, right? And as a diligent member of the work force, you deserve a chair that’s ready and able to support your body while you toil at the daily grind. Having a well-designed chair is about a lot more than your personal comfort. In fact, medical studies have shown that men and women who sit for prolonged periods of time in unsupportive office chairs experience a much higher proportion of back problems, back pain and muscle strain than those who use a chair that is ergonomically designed to support the spine and relieve pressure on the legs and other areas of the body.

When choosing an ergonomically designed chair, there are certain characteristics to look for. First, does the chair offer an adjustable height mechanism? Depending upon the height of your work surface and the type of work you’re doing — for instance, staring at a computer screen or writing or reviewing materials — your chair should be at a height that supports your arms, as well as your back, and is adjusted properly so that you can view your computer screen without unintentionally leaning forward or to one side. It’s important to have a chair that’s capable of a wide-ranging extension of height to serve all your needs.

The Boss Contour Comfort Drafting Chair is a good example of full height adjustability. The pneumatic height adjust system means height can be adjusted easily with the touch of your hand, and of course, the option of fabric color is always a good thing in a small office space, where a burst of color can help lighten your mood. The Office Star VeraFlex Deluxe Chair is another example of height adjustability, and helps alleviate the potential for arm and shoulder strain while using a computer for prolonged periods of time. Like the Boss Contour Chair above, the Office Star is also offered in a selection of more muted colors.

The second consideration when choosing an ergonomically designed office chair is the quality of the lumbar support. Your lumbar spine consists of the vertebrae of the lower back, and receives much of the strain that occurs from long periods of sitting. Providing adequate support here can go a long way in eliminating back strain and pain. The Boss Leather Ergonomic Executive Office Chair offers a built-in lumbar support with a full, padded back for added comfort. The design is ideal for more traditional spaces. The Boss Deluxe Highback Executive Contemporary Chair is another great example of lumbar support presented in a stylish package, and features an extra layer of padding for additional softness and support.

For smaller or more contemporary spaces, choose a chair like the Boss EXO Contemporary Computer Task Chair, designed with contours that reflect the shape of the human body to provide the ultimate in spine support. This chair also features a tilt function to ensure you remain supported while in front of the computer.

If your office has the space, consider using a more traditional chair at your desk and a chair specifically designed for computer use at your workstation. The Office Star Matrex Mid-Back Manager’s Chair is a good choice, offering a padded seat and lumbar support.

Although a mesh back is not an essential element of an ergonomically designed office chair, if leather chairs make you perspire or your office experiences shifts in temperature, the extra airflow provided by a mesh back design can go a long way toward keeping you cool and comfortable. When an individual’s back becomes too warm as a result of the chair they’re using, the result is to lean forward to allow air to flow between the back and the chair to provide cooling. But by leaning forward, you miss the supportive protection offered by a built-in lumbar feature. Chairs that offer mesh eliminate the need to lean, and are a good choice when combined with a lumbar support and an adjustable height mechanism.

The Office Star Air Grid Back Managers Chair is a great example of a desk chair that offers all three elements: height adjustability, lumbar support and a mesh back, as well as a padded seat for comfort. If you’re looking for a task chair with a mesh back feature, consider the Office Star Professional Air Grid Deluxe Task Chair. This chair also offers adjustable height, lumbar support and a mesh back, as well as tilt control for ease of use at a computer workstation. The Boss Mesh back task Chair offers similar features, but in a smaller profile.

No matter what type of business you’re in, the more comfortable you are, the more you’re able to focus. Investing in a supportive, quality chair can make you happier and more productive at work. And for those of you who may not be the most diligent workers, these chairs also offer premium support for those all-important midday naps at your desk.

When shopping for an ergonomic chair online, finding the best chair for you depends on what kind of work you do and whether you need it at home or at work. Most people spend hundreds of dollars on a new computer, then go out and buy a cheap poor quality computer chair from an office supply store. It’s not very likely that you’ll find a cheap ergonomic chair. If you’re willing to buy a used chair you may be able to find a used ergonomic office chair or an expensive chair like the Aeron chair online or on eBay.

Medical chairs and dental chairs benefit from using ergonomics. And clean-room chairs and ESD chairs are also on the market. These chairs come with height adjustable options as well as seat pan and a back option and have inflatable lumbar support and footrest options. If you work in a lab you may need an ergonomic lab chair or lab stool on a tall cylinder with or without arms; when you’re working while sitting on a taller stool you’ll need to consider a foot-rest to give you just the right support for you feet, ankles and knees. Ergonomic task chairs have height-adjustable, pivoting arm rests and oversized and linear tracking arms.

Ergonomic executive office chairs or seating, also called managers’ chairs, are often available with a higher back and leather or stitched leather upholstery. They usually have a knee tilt mechanism, which is perfect for multi-tasking; this makes it easy to go from computer work to phone conferences with ease. Some of the online stores can build an ergonomic lab chair or lab stool chair to fit your specs if you can’t find one that works for you.

A seat pan with a sliding mechanism is also a good feature; this allows both small and tall users to adjust the distance from the back rest. And an adequate lumbar support is the most critical element of a backrest. Many chairs come with a built-in lumbar adjustment, which can be adjusted by turning a knob that’s on the side of the chair.

Look at the casters – choose the hard casters for carpeting and the rubber-coated ones for hard surfaces. The chair recline or tilt adjustment changes the angle of the seat in relation to the floor. Find an ergonomic chair with casters and a 5-point base to ease movement and minimize any tipping.

In general, nylon carpet casters are standard, but soft wheel casters can be found for hard surfaces such as linoleum. It’s important to buy a chair which uses dense, small-cell foam padding or spring coils to retain its support and cushioning, usually found only in higher quality chairs.

Both home and office ergonomics are important because we spend a lot more time today using a computer both at the office and at home. And sitting at workstations that aren’t designed with ergonomics in mind can contribute to serious problems such as carpal tunnel syndrome and repetitive stress injuries.

Some online stores rent out ergonomic chairs and other expensive equipment. You can try out a chair for a month before deciding if you want to buy it and if you decide to keep the chair, the stores apply the rental price toward the total cost of purchase. And very good deals can be found online and at office furniture consignment and resale shops. Remember that you probably spend many hours on your computer and a purchase is really a long-term investment in your health.

What do you think of me describing my room.?

did i do a good job describing my room?

One of the most important places in my life is my room. It’s the place where I can escape all of my problems, and take a break, even if only for 5 minutes. As soon as you walk in my room, you see deep raspberry pink walls. If you look straight ahead then you will see white shutters, and a big dresser with a mirror and cosmetics all over the dresser. If you look to the right, you will see a twin size bed with a pink/blue/green/orange comforter pushed up against the wall. The you will see my headboard with all my twilight books on top. Right next to my bed is a floor reading lamp, with 5 light bulbs, that you can change which ones light up and what direction they point. Next to the lamp there’s my pink office chair. When I sit on my bed I put my back against the wall and put my feet in the chair. On the back wall closest to the lamp, is a tall dresser. On that dresser I have my small 15’ television, and my small stereo, that can play music freaking loud. Right next to my big dresser I have 2 small dressers; one contains only about half of my cds and that dresser is full. The rest of my cds are in the living room in the entertainment center. The other dresser has my jewelry box. If you look in my closet which is right next to the door, you’ll see that the top rack is completely full of shirts. And the bottom rack is full of Pants. Then I have 6 shelves in my closet which, 3 are completely full of high heels, and the other 2, are full of vans, and boots, and DC’s. On the wall between my mirror and my curtains, I have a bulletin/ whiteboard that are complete full of events, deadlines, and ext. Above my mirror I have a shelf that has my fist dance photo on it, all my trophies and medals, and my I Wuv You, doll, that my great grandma gave to me right before she died. And on the wall of my TV. There is a photo of me, that my mom says that I look like a model.
